Iran: Christianity on the FRONTLINES
Spreading the Gospel in Iran is significantly challenging due to the country’s stringent religious and political restrictions. The Iranian government enforces strict laws prohibiting proselytizing and conversion from Islam, leading to severe consequences for those who attempt to share their faith. Christians and other religious minorities often face harassment, imprisonment, and even torture. Additionally, the pervasive surveillance and censorship in Iran make it difficult for Christian groups to gather and communicate openly, further complicating efforts to share the gospel. However, here at Frontlines International, we believe the Spirit leads us to share the Good News with all the world, including in dangerous places. Here are some stories from our work in Iran.
A Renewed Hope
Jaffar had a friend from his days in military service that he hadn’t heard from in a long time.. One day, Jaffar received an unexpected call from his old friend. The surprise was immense since they hadn’t been in touch for a long while. His friend explained that he needed to meet with Jaffar, so they arranged a meeting.
When they finally met, Jaffar was struck with sadness for his friend who appeared to have gone through a lot and seemed quite miserable. They sat down and talked, and Jaffar quickly realized that his friend was deeply unhappy due to a series of unfortunate events. His friend was desperate and crying out for help.
Jaffar decided to share his own story. He talked about his journey and how his life had become peaceful and hopeful. His friend listened intently throughout Jaffar ‘s account. After Jaffar finished, his friend asked him to tell him more about Jesus and the path Jaffar had found.
Jaffar felt the presence of Jesus and the Holy Spirit guiding him. He promised to give his friend a book about Jesus (the Bible) as soon as possible. Since that day, his friend has been reading this Bible and is eager to share the Good News with his own friends.
Testimonies of Mahmud
Mahmud, who has faced significant hardship, has been rejected by his son-in-law because of his commitment to his faith. Now, his own son has been imprisoned on false charges, though the real reason is his Christian faith. Despite these trials, Mahmud remains steadfast in his faith, declaring, “Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will take joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, and He will make me walk on my high hills.”
Mahmud is a man of few words but strong actions, demonstrating his faith through perseverance. We ask for your prayers for Mahmud and his family, especially for his son’s release from prison. Please also pray for other coworkers facing threats, that they may remain strong and encouraged in the Lord.
A Lesson in Forgiveness
Wahid’s heart raced as he heard the truck driver’s unexpected apology. They had just met, and the truck was crammed with Bibles hidden beneath layers of other items, most definitely punishable by imprisonment or death in this part of the world. Wahid had been assured by a trusted contact that this man was reliable, and he was in charge of this secret delivery of Bibles…but the situation felt uncertain. He could be betrayed at any moment for smuggling Bibles.
Wahid was intrigued. It is rare to see a Kurd so unsettled and apologetic, and in such a humble manner. It didn’t seem like this person would betray him.
“I owe you an apology,” the truck driver began, his voice filled with sincere regret. “I took two Bibles from you.”
Wahid‘s eyebrows knit in confusion. He had just met this man and hadn’t yet grasped the context of his statement. The driver continued, “I want to assure you, I’m glad I did it. I took them because I was deeply moved by their message and felt an urgent need to share them with my community. But I felt it was right to ask for your forgiveness for not asking first.”
The truck driver’s unexpected honesty and the nature of his confession serve as a powerful lesson for all who hear it. In a world often marred by dishonesty and mistrust, this moment reveals the profound impact of genuine repentance and the courage it takes to seek forgiveness. The driver’s actions highlight the transformative power of the Gospel and reminds us of its call for truth and reconciliation.
