Rising from Manipur’s Ruins

In May 2023, in the heart of Manipur, a state in North-East India, fear and violence suddenly turned lives upside down. One Christian woman’s unbreakable spirit became the beacon of hope for her children. Rita* along with her husband and two children lived happily in Imphal Valley. However, their lives were shattered during the violent ethnic conflict between the Hindu majority Meitei and the Christian minority Kuki-zo last year.

Rita’s husband was brutally murdered in the chaos, and his body never recovered, leaving Rita and her children in a state of overwhelming pain and confusion. She received no support from the government or anyone else.

“I had to flee Imphal during the riots,” she shares. “Now, I live in Kangpokpi District. It felt impossible to get back on my feet. But then, in October, Frontlines stepped in like a beacon of hope. They helped me start a small clothing shop, and now I can proudly say I’m standing on my own again.”

Though the worst of the conflict in Manipur has passed, regular violence against Christians in Manipur continues. Thousands of displaced people, including Rita, have not been able to return to their villages and continue to live in makeshift camps for internally displaced people. Despite these ongoing challenges, she now sets up her shop at local markets, earning Rs. 500-600 per day ($10 per day). This income allows her to support her children and maintain a temporary home.

She expresses deep gratitude for the support that gave her life a new direction: “I am very thankful to Frontlines International. They brought light into my life, and now I can move forward. Thank you so much for giving me a new purpose.”

Prayer Points:

Pray for Peace and Reconciliation: Ask for an end to the ongoing violence and ethnic conflict in Manipur. Pray for reconciliation between the Meitei and Kuki-zo communities, so that they may find common ground and work towards lasting peace. Pray that government and community leaders will prioritize dialogue and justice for all affected.

Pray for Protection and Support for Displaced Individuals: Pray for the safety and protection of those who have been displaced due to the conflict, especially Christians facing persecution. Ask for God’s provision and comfort for those living in makeshift camps and for the restoration of their homes and communities.

Pray for Strength and Resilience: Pray for strength and resilience for individuals like the brave woman in the story who are rebuilding their lives after devastating loss. Ask that they may find continued support and hope in their new endeavors, and that their courage will inspire others in similar situations.
