The Christians of Myanmar

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a Southeast Asian country with a rich and complex history. Bordered by India, China, Thailand, Laos, and Bangladesh, it has diverse population groups, including the Bamar, Shan, Karen, and Rakhine. Myanmar’s history is marked by centuries of monarchy, British colonization, and a long struggle for independence, finally achieved in 1948. However, the country has faced ongoing internal conflicts, particularly involving ethnic minorities, and periods of military rule that have shaped its political landscape.

In recent years, Myanmar has attracted global attention due to its turbulent political situation. The military, known as the Tatmadaw, seized power in a coup in February 2021, overthrowing the civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi. This coup has not only led to widespread protests and brutal crackdowns on dissents but has also significantly exacerbated the persecution of minority groups, particularly Christians, who have long been marginalized in this predominantly Buddhist nation.

The persecution of Christians in Myanmar has intensified since the military coup, with violence against Christian minorities, especially in Chin and Kayah states, reaching alarming levels. Christians have faced indiscriminate attacks on churches, forced displacement, and targeted violence, often finding refuge in IDP camps or remote jungles where access to basic necessities is limited. The conflict has not only affected those actively involved in resistance movements but also ordinary Christians who are targeted simply for their faith. Converts to Christianity face persecution from their communities, and non-traditional church groups, particularly in rural areas, often face opposition  due to their evangelistic activities.

Help us help them

This persecution is part of a broader pattern of ethnic and religious discrimination that has plagued Myanmar for decades. The military’s increasing use of sophisticated surveillance technology, combined with the entrenched nature of the civil war, has made life increasingly perilous for Christians, who are often viewed as subversive by both the government and the majority Buddhist population. The plight of Christians in Myanmar is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by religious minorities in conflict zones. Frontlines International is making inroads to help believers in need with Bibles and discipleship resources to keep them strong in their faith. Please keep our dear brothers and sisters in this country in your prayers.

Prayer Points:

  • Pray for Peace and Stability: Ask for an end to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, that peace and stability may be restored. Pray that the military government will seek justice and freedom for all citizens, and that dialogue and reconciliation will replace violence and oppression.
  • Pray for the Protection of Christians: Pray for the safety and protection of Christians in Myanmar, especially those facing persecution in conflict zones like Chin and Kayah states. Ask for God’s comfort, strength, and provision for those who have been displaced, and that churches will be safe havens for all who seek refuge.
  • Pray for Unity and Hope Among Believers: Pray that Christians in Myanmar will remain united and steadfast in their faith despite the challenges they face. Ask that the Holy Spirit will empower them with hope, wisdom, and courage as they navigate persecution, and that their testimony will be a beacon of light in the darkness.
